Left for Dead in 1948: The Battle that Shaped Ariel Sharon

This Times of Israel article tells the story of how a young Ariel Sharon led his battalion in one of the most important military missions of his career: the Battle of Latrun. Were it not for the selflessness of one of his young soldiers, himself wounded, 20-year-old Sharon would no doubt have died on the battlefield that day in 1948. Nowadays, the KKL-JNF commemorates the site and the heavy losses incurred there with a beautiful hiking trail that follows the story of the battle.
