The Story Behind Jerusalem’s Iconic Windmill

In Hebrew with English subtitles, this fascinating video (12:58) tells the story behind the iconic windmill of Jerusalem, showing how the flour mill constructed by Sir Moses Montefiore at the end of the 19th century became a symbol of Jerusalem, representing ingenuity, progress, and the return of the Jews to the Land of Israel. Produced by the Jerusalem Foundation in honor of the restoration of the windmill in 2012, this video features video footage from the early days of the windmill, as well as interviews with iconic cultural and political figures, such as the children of S.Y. Agnon and Yehuda Amichai reading their fathers’ writings on the windmill, along with Sir Montefiore’s relatives, former Jerusalem mayor, Nir Barkat, and Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.
